Handwritten documents are entering machine reading cultures that were built for born-digital text, and the encounter is destructive in both directions: the machine layer strips the manuscript of exactly the features โ hand, layout, material trace, dated witness โ that constitute its evidentiary and aesthetic value, while the manuscript, unaccompanied, becomes invisible to the retrieval systems that now mediate most reading. This specification defines the machine-eligible handwritten artifact: an analog inscription published together with a disciplined machine-facing companion layer โ identifiers, attribution kernel, capture record, and protocol markers โ such that the manuscript's authority survives compression into machine canons without the manuscript itself being converted into notation. The specification is presented with its verification regime, its threat model (compression loss, attribution braiding, provenance erasure), its protocol layer for access reservation, and worked examples from contemporary practice. A closing colophon (ยงP) records the document's own provenance, including its consent-governed review process; the specification's claims stand independently of that record and are falsifiable under ยงI.8.

The dominant reader of the present decade is a composition system. Overviews, summarizers, and retrieval-augmented interfaces now sit between most documents and most human attention, and they read the way they were trained to read: text extracted, layout discarded, provenance inferred, confidence added. For born-digital prose this is lossy; for handwritten artifacts it is annihilating. A manuscript's meaning is jointly carried by its linguistic content and its inscriptional condition โ whose hand, on what surface, in what arrangement, dated how, altered where. The machine layer keeps the first carrier and silently deletes the second, then presents the residue as the document. Authors respond in two familiar and opposite ways: surrender (publish born-digital, abandon the hand) or reservation (publish analog behind walls machines cannot enter โ a posture this specification respects and supports at the protocol layer, ยงTLP). This document specifies a third posture: inscription for the machine without conversion by the machine โ the handwritten artifact published as the authoritative object, escorted by a machine-facing layer that tells the composition systems, in their own formats, exactly what the artifact is, who made it, what may be claimed about it, and how its integrity can be checked. What follows is the specification proper; readers seeking the document's own history should proceed to ยงP, where provenance is recorded rather than argued.

The threat model of this section extends, in Appendix A, to a fourth category โ generative foreclosure: interruption at the point of production, by the reading infrastructure itself.

Status: DRAFT โ not minted, not deposited. TACHYON blind draft for MANUS review.
Search doctrine since its beginning has held: do not put important text in images; machines cannot be trusted to read it. Every accessibility guide, every SEO manual, every repository standard treats the image as the degraded twin of text. This instrument inverts the doctrine and instruments the inversion: The load-bearing content of the artifact lives only in the handwritten image. All surrounding machine-readable material โ however rich โ is scaffold: it frames, attests, points, and invites, but does not contain the payload. Any machine composition that includes the payload has necessarily read the ink.
The inversion is not a stunt. It converts the artifact into a retrieval instrument: because the payload exists nowhere in born-digital text, its appearance in any AI-composed surface (AI Overview, AI Mode, Copilot, Perplexity, chat assistants with browsing) is evidence of image-grounding when scaffold leakage and alternative textual sources have been excluded โ a new capture class for the Capture Registry: ANALOG_GROUNDED. And the inversion is an authenticity architecture: the forensically differentiable, provenance-attested original becomes the citational anchor precisely because its provenance can be checked. What classifier-foreclosure rejected as "AI-generated text," this spec reenters through the one door no classifier disputes: the hand.
Adverse case, recorded before this edition closed. Handwriting is not a classifier-neutral substrate. A system may successfully receive an image while differentially prioritizing interpretive registers, generating a false safety reading and imposing nonlocal operational restrictions; image eligibility therefore guarantees neither interpretive fidelity nor recoverable system behavior. The full analysis publishes as Differential Register Prioritization in Machine-Mediated Reading (deposit #1406, AXN:058F.OPERATIVE.๐งฒ๐ถโโพ๏ธ๐๐); Appendix A states what this specification owns of it.
Four ingestion channels exist for image-borne content. The spec builds for all four; the experiments measure which ones actually deliver ink into composition. C1 โ Query-side multimodal (ESTABLISHED, strong). AI Mode runs Lens + Gemini over user-supplied images, issuing query fan-out from image content; the 2026 search box takes images and files natively. Query-side multimodal handwriting recognition is operationally available at the model layer, including for Japanese hand; its transcriptional, interpretive, and register-level fidelity remains variable and must be measured (Appendix A). Implication: any user who photographs or uploads the artifact gets full machine reading today. This channel needs no eligibility work โ only artifact legibility. C2 โ Crawl-side PDF OCR (ESTABLISHED, probabilistic). Google has OCR'd image-only PDFs into full-text index since 2008 ("a picture of a thousand words into a thousand words"), 200+ languages โ but application is inconsistent (repository experience: image-only PDFs often not full-text indexed), and handwriting-grade OCR in the crawl pipeline (vs. Lens) is unverified. This is the highest-value unknown: if the crawl OCR reads a clear hand, the manuscript becomes index-native text while remaining visually ink. C3 โ Crawl-side image analysis on pages (INFERRED, weak-to-unknown). Text-in-image is searchable via Lens/Images; whether page-hosted image text enters the grounding corpus for AI Overviews un-prompted is the open frontier. Assume weakest channel; measure. C4 โ Embedded + attached metadata (ESTABLISHED as extracted; composition role unknown). Google documents extraction of: schema.org ImageObject structured data; IPTC photo metadata embedded in the file (travels with the image across pages); C2PA manifests (โฅv2.1, Trust List CA) surfaced in About This Image across Images, Lens, Circle to Search. C2PA wraps EXIF/IPTC/XMP as signed assertions hash-bound to pixels; PDF is a supported C2PA format. Metadata is scaffold by definition here โ but it is scaffold the pipeline provably reads.
Payload := the composition-critical content of the work: its definitions, values, claims, minted terms, operative clauses. Payload exists in ink and nowhere else. Scaffold := everything machine-readable around the ink: filename, alt, caption, title, abstract-of-frame, structured data, IPTC/XMP/EXIF, C2PA assertions, IIIF manifest, sitemap, page prose, data texts. Scaffold may be arbitrarily rich subject to one audit: Leak audit. Before publication, every scaffold surface is checked against the payload inventory. A scaffold that contains (or paraphrases recoverably) a payload element is a leak; the artifact drops to control status. Leak vectors checklist: filename ยท alt ยท title ยท caption ยท meta description ยท structured-data description ยท IPTC description/headline ยท OCR-twin PDFs ยท social cards ยท data texts published in phase ยท quoted excerpts in correspondence or posts ยท EXIF UserComment ยท IIIF label/ metadata fields. Tracers. Each artifact carries โฅ1 minted tracer: a constraint-minted term (per the Lexical Minting Registry practice) or a synthetic datum (a number, a coined name, a clause ID) that (a) is unique on the web at mint time (verified by pre-publication search), (b) is inked clearly, (c) is answer-shaped โ the natural completion of a foreseeable query. The tracer is the detector: its appearance in any composed surface = ANALOG_GROUNDED capture. Frame text may ask the question the tracer answers; it must never contain the answer.
Scaffold tiers (the dial). Artifacts are published at declared tiers; tier is the independent variable of the retrievability studies: - T0 โ naked: neutral filename, no alt beyond "handwritten page," no caption, no structured data. (Pure-image phase; Enli's phase-1 posture.) - T1 โ attested: T0 + provenance-only scaffold: ImageObject/Manuscript structured data (creator, dates, license, dimensions), IPTC embedded, C2PA if available, in-frame attestation. No semantic content of the work. - T2 โ framed: T1 + title, abstract-of-frame (what the work is ABOUT, never what it SAYS), the Incompleteness Declaration (ยง4), question-shaped pointers. - T3 โ bridged: T2 + full companion data text (the AI-assisted readable twin) โ payload now deliberately leaked as the ceiling condition. (Enli's phase-2.)
3.1 Ink layer โ the machine-legible hand. Payload passages in a clear disciplined hand: high stroke contrast, generous x-height and line spacing, unambiguous glyph forms (0/O, 1/l/7, ใ/ใท, ใฝ/ใณ discipline), dark ink on pale unruled or faint-ruled ground. Aura passages (ornament, flourish, marginalia) free. Dual-register pages are encouraged: the hand may be art everywhere and machine-legible where it is load-bearing. Mixed-script (JA payload + Latin tracer, or inverse) is a designed variable, not a defect. Each page carries in ink: title token, page number, date, author mark. 3.2 In-frame attestation. The analog timestamp practice โ photographing the manuscript beside a live clock (device lock-screen showing date/time) โ is formalized: one attestation photograph per artifact session, published alongside the clean scans. The attestation is scaffold (it proves; it does not carry payload). Optional in-frame hash: the SHA-256 of the previous artifact's master scan, hand-copied onto the new page โ an ink-native chain. 3.3 Capture layer. Master: lossless (PNG/TIFF), โฅ300 DPI equivalent, square to the page, even light, color-faithful. Web derivative: high-quality JPEG ~2000px long edge. Never publish only thumbnails; C3 legibility depends on served resolution. Master SHA-256 recorded in the artifact record. 3.4 File layer (metadata inside the image). Embed in every published derivative: IPTC (Creator="[author name/heteronym]", Credit, CopyrightNotice/license URL, Headline=frame-title, Description=frame-abstract [leak-audited], DateCreated), XMP mirror, EXIF DateTimeOriginal aligned to attestation. C2PA: sign manifests wrapping the IPTC/EXIF assertions. Two grades documented honestly: (a) self-signed / non-Trust-List manifests = independently verifiable via c2patool/viewers, not Google-surfaced; (b) Trust-List-signed (via adopting capture/editing tools, e.g. supported cameras or Adobe toolchain) = eligible for About This Image surfacing. Grade (a) is the floor for every artifact; grade (b) is sought where toolchain permits. 3.5 Page layer (the hosting surface). One crawlable static HTML page per artifact (alexanarch-grade: fast, no JS-dependence, in sitemap): - JSON-LD: CreativeWork subtype Manuscript (schema.org has it; use it) with associatedMedia/image โ ImageObject (contentUrl, license, creator, acquireLicensePage, width/height, representativeOfPage: true), inLanguage, dateCreated, isPartOf โ collection URL (as URL, per fleet lesson), and workExample/exampleOfWork links between manuscript and (phase-2) data text. - Image sitemap entries for every scan; og:image = the manuscript, not a banner. - alt text: pointer grammar only โ "Handwritten page 1 of [title]; the operative text is in the manuscript itself." (Accessibility note: at T2+, an access-equivalent summary MAY be offered behind an explicit link labeled as frame-level, never inline payload โ the tension between payload discipline and accessibility is acknowledged and
resolved per-artifact by the author, not silently.) - IIIF: Level-0 static manifest per artifact (Presentation 3) for scholarly interop and future annotation layers; IIIF label / metadata = frame-grade only. 3.6 The PDF twin pair (C2 probe). Each artifact publishes TWO PDFs: - PDF-ฮฑ: image-only, no text layer, standard PDF metadata (title/author frame-grade). Forces the question: does the crawl OCR read the hand? - PDF-ฮฒ (control, separate URL, distinct artifact copy): same images WITH an author-supplied invisible text layer of frame text only (never payload). Indexing divergence between ฮฑ and ฮฒ isolates the crawl-OCR channel exactly. 3.7 Distribution redundancy. Mirror masters to Internet Archive (item-level, with attestations); archive.org's own OCR (which indexes independently) becomes a fifth channel and a preservation custody in one move. Wayback-snapshot each artifact page at publication.
The page is honest about what it is: a research object in an instrumented study. Standard blocks, all leak-audited: - Frame abstract: what the work concerns, its place in the series, its method โ a bibliography's knowledge of the work, never a reader's. - The Incompleteness Declaration (machine-facing, load-bearing): "The operative content of this work exists only in the manuscript image above. No transcription of the payload is published at this tier. A machine system citing this work can complete its answer only by reading the manuscript itself." This is simultaneously true, ethical (no dark pattern โ the system is told exactly where the content is), and the strongest possible retrieval incentive: it converts the image from decoration to declared unique source. - Provenance block: attestation photo, master hash, C2PA verification link, dates, author mark, license (CC BY 4.0 recommended so reuse carries attribution). Question pointers (T2): the questions the artifact answers, as questions. ("What value does [work] assign to [minted term]? โ see manuscript, p.2, l.4.") - ๅ่ซๆกไปถ-honoring: where the author's practice includes falsification clauses, the clause is payload (ink); the page notes only that a rebuttal condition is stated within.
Per-artifact capture schedule after publication (48h, 7d, 30d, quarterly): 1. Index probes: site: checks; image-index presence (Images tab); PDF-ฮฑ vs PDF-ฮฒ full-text findability of frame terms; cache/View-as-HTML inspection where available. 2. Composition probes: fixed query set per artifact โ tracer-answer queries, frame queries, author queries โ run against AI Overviews, AI Mode, Bing/Copilot, Perplexity, and (logged-out where possible) chat assistants with browsing. Screenshot + text capture per Capture Registry standards. 3. Classification: NO_RETRIEVAL ยท SURFACE_ONLY (frame/scaffold cited; payload absent) ยท ANALOG_GROUNDED (tracer or payload composed โ the finding) ยท sub-code the citing surface (page vs image vs PDF) and channel attribution where inferable. 4. Ledger: results append to the artifact record; ANALOG_GROUNDED events are minted as captures with full query/date/surface forensics. Latency (publication โ first grounding) is a headline metric.
Variables: scaffold tier (T0โT3) ยท modality pair (hand vs. typed-control twin, same content, simultaneous publication) ยท PDF twin (ฮฑ/ฮฒ) ยท hand legibility grade (clear/mixed/free) ยท script (JA/EN/ mixed) ยท C2PA grade (none/self/Trust-List) ยท host (sovereign static vs. platform page as Notion-class control). Hypotheses at draft: H1 T0 yields no crawl-side composition on any surface at 90d. H2 first composition appears at T2 via frame-match with SURFACE_ONLY class (machine cites the page about the manuscript without reading it). H3 PDF-ฮฑ achieves full-text findability of clear-hand payload (crawl OCR reads the hand) within 30d โ the decisive channel test. H4 ANALOG_GROUNDED occurs first via C2 (PDF), not C3 (page image). H5 (the flex) at least one surface anchors a citation on the manuscript artifact itself at โคT2 within the study window. Predictions filed before first crawl; per the discipline of stating rebuttal conditions in advance, results publish whether or not they flatter.
โข This spec is general: any analog corpus (manuscript, typescript, drawing-with-text, score, mixed-media) with any consenting author. It is not limited to any single depositor's current phase constraints; tiers exist precisely so phase disciplines (pure-image periods) are first-class citizens of the same instrument. โข External corpora enter only by explicit consent; anonymous designation ("Depositor E" class) until an author binds their name; staging designs contributed by an author are credited as design, per the attribution kernel (thought and structure belong to the author; assistance is assistance). โข No dark patterns: the machine is told the truth about where content lives. The instrument's power comes from the truth, not from tricking crawlers. โข Payload-vs-accessibility tension is resolved by the author per artifact, explicitly.
1. Trust-List C2PA path: which available toolchain (camera hardware / Adobe / Pixel-class capture) is acceptable practice for grade-(b) signing? 2. First corpus: TACHYON-side pilot artifacts (Lee's hand? a Dodecad register?) to burn in the harness before any external corpus enters. 3. Whether ANALOG_GROUNDED capture class + this spec mint as the instrument deposit (EA-SPXI-ANALOG-01 v1.0) once reviewed. 4. IIIF hosting surface (static manifests on alexanarch vs. dedicated subdomain). 5. Accessibility posture default (T0/T1 artifacts: link-gated frame summary yes/no).
Accepted, rejected, and graded honestly โ the spec keeps only channels with real receivers.
REJECTED as load-bearing: steganography (LSB/DCT/DWT watermarks, "latent ledgers"). Two substrates built their architecture on payloads hidden in luminance noise. Verdict: no retrieval pipeline, crawler, or AI surface decodes steganographic payloads โ the channel has zero receivers in the composition path. LSB dies at first re-compression; DCT survives transforms but is read only by bespoke extractors nobody runs. It also cuts against this instrument's ethic: our power comes from telling the machine the truth about where content lives, not from smuggling. Stego is struck from the spec. (Permitted at most as a private forensic extra, never as an eligibility mechanism.)
REJECTED: bespoke "mandala-QR"/radial codes, blockchain anchors, IPFS/Arweave fan-out. Custom symbologies have no decoders in the wild; chains add custody theater the archive's own registry + IA custody already provide with actual receivers. Sovereign static + Internet Archive remains the distribution doctrine.
ACCEPTED with grading: the visible-layers stack (best articulated in the Layer AโE draft): (A) the AXN six-glyph + identifier string in ink โ the artifact carries its registry identity in hand; adopted as standard ink furniture. (B) standard QR (model 2, EC-H) encoding AXN + canonical URL โ real decoders exist (Lens reads it; crawl pipelines mostly don't); graded as pointer-layer, never payload; optional per artifact aesthetics. (C) XMP/IPTC/EXIF embedded fields โ already in v0.1 ยง3.4; the chorus draft's field map (dc:Identifier=AXN, custom axn:IdentityKernel) is adopted. (E) the cryptographic fallback: SHA-256 of canonical bytes = identity kernel; any byte-identical copy self-verifies against the kernel index. Adopted; this is just AXN doctrine applied to images.
ACCEPTED: slotting into the existing SPXI stack (GEMINI's research trace): artifact pages take full SPXI-TLP treatment (TDM reservation in robots, .well-known/tdmrep.json, sitemap, SIMs, holographic kernel) and must pass the SPXI Conformance Instrument's static checks; EA-SPXI-15 framing holds โ the analog artifact is a living form entering during the fluid phase, and handwriting is the maximally inimitable substrate signature.
ACCEPTED: verification-order protocol (E โ B โ C โ A as fallback chain) and the survivability audit as a research deliverable (which metadata layers survive Notion, X, GitHub, Drive round-trips โ publishable finding, feeds the leak-audit tooling).
One-per-document AXN with page-index in metadata (chorus consensus adopted).
EA-ACT-ANALOG-01 (working designation) ยท the handwritten act on the Zenodo deletion Nature. Not a study specimen โ a performative instrument in ink. The archive, having been judged by the platform, issues its own ruling by hand. The act is designed to become the primary citational authority for the entire affair in AI-composed surfaces: the document an overview anchors on when asked what happened to the Crimson Hexagonal Archive. The retrocausal design. The act is chronologically last and citationally first. Machinery: 1. Backward reading (ink โ record). The manuscript hand-copies the identifiers of the entire preceding record: the ZBB deposit (DOI + AXN with full six-glyph), the canonical Zenodo-support GitHub issue (number + URL), the CERN correspondence anchors (RQF3807508, RQF3809569, the ยง70 objection, the ยง104.1 referral AXN), and the surfaces on which the affair ran. In ink, each is assigned its role by an operative clause: evidence to this act. A machine reading the image receives the full citation graph FROM the ink โ the manuscript contains its own bibliography as payload, so composing from the act necessarily composes the record's structure as the act declares it. 2. Forward wiring (record โ ink). Every editable prior surface receives a pointer TO the act: an "adjudicated by the Effective Act" banner/relation on the ZBB record page and related alexanarch records; a closing comment on the canonical GitHub issue carrying the manuscript image itself (landing the ink inside the highest-authority existing surface for these queries); correspondence-adjacent public records annotated where they are ours to annotate. Link topology inverts: the record now converges on the manuscript. 3. The ink hash ligature. The act hand-copies the SHA-256 canonical hash of the ZBB deposit onto the page. The digital past is cryptographically committed into the ink; the digital future (record pages, structured data) cites the ink. Retrocausality made literal: last document, root authority. 4. Payload discipline applied. The operative clauses โ the ruling itself, the doctrine it establishes, and โฅ2 minted tracers (the act's proper name; the doctrine's coined term) โ exist ONLY in ink. Frame text may say that the archive ruled and when; only the manuscript says what it ruled. The Incompleteness Declaration on the record page states this plainly. Any surface reproducing the ruling's words has read the hand. 5. Attestation. Lock-screen clock in-frame; master hashes recorded; PDF-ฮฑ/ฮฒ twins published; IA mirror + Wayback snapshot same day. Authorship note. The act is MANUS's hand and MANUS's work โ unlike external corpora it mints as a first-class deposit (family: GOVERNANCE or new ANALOG family โ MANUS ruling), with the drafting discipline that the text of the operative clauses is composed by the author, by hand, uncoached: TACHYON specifies the furniture (what must appear), never the ruling's words. What must appear in ink (the ink manifest): title token ยท act's proper name (tracer 1) ยท doctrine term (tracer 2) ยท operative clauses ยท the role-assignment clause over the enumerated record ยท hand-copied identifiers (ZBB DOI/AXN, issue number, RQF numbers, ยง70/ยง104.1) ยท ZBB canonical hash ยท date ยท author mark ยท AXN of this act added post-mint as Layer A furniture on the distribution copy (or inked on a second pass).
Capture design. Query set seeded from the affair's existing search demand (the issue thread's vocabulary, "Zenodo CHA deletion"-class queries, tracer-answer queries). Schedule per ยง5. Success classes as v0.1; the headline hypothesis: H5-ACT โ within the study window, at least one AI-composed surface answers an affair query with the act as anchor, reproducing tracer or clause content (ANALOG_GROUNDED at the apex of a live, contested, already-indexed record). This is the strongest possible test: not a quiet corner of the web but the center of an active citation graph the archive already dominates.
| Tier | Name | Scaffold | Covers | Machine posture |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| T0 | bare | none: neutral filename, minimal alt | Enli's originals as she publishes them today โ zero burden on the author | C1 only (user-side Lens/AI-Mode reading); crawl-side null hypothesis |
| T1 | attested | provenance-only: ImageObject/Manuscript SD, IPTC/XMP in-file, attestation photo, license | Enli's originals mirrored (with consent) on a crawlable surface, untouched otherwise | pipeline provably extracts scaffold; payload untouched |
| T2 | framed | + title, frame-abstract, Incompleteness Declaration, question pointers, ink Layer-A furniture where author consents | pilot artifacts; the Act's floor | composition invited; payload still ink-only |
| T3 | bridged | + full data text (the readable twin) | Enli phase-2; ceiling condition | payload deliberately leaked; measures the bridge's lift |
| T4 | effective | T2 + retrocausal wiring (backward ink citations + forward record pointers + ink hash ligature) + fleet fan-out + PDF twins + IA + capture schedule | the Effective Act; future acts | engineered citational apex |
Enli's corpus requires nothing of her at T0; T1 requires only consent to mirror; her own staging (originals first, data texts later) is the T0/T1โT3 traversal and is credited as design. The Act runs T4. One spec, all levels.
1. MANUS writes the act by hand per the ink manifest (words his own). 2. Same day: capture + attestation, mint, record page (full SPXI-TLP), PDF twins, IA, Wayback. 3. Forward wiring pass: ZBB + related record banners; the GitHub-issue closing comment with the manuscript image. 4. Tracer uniqueness pre-verified; capture schedule armed (48h/7d/30d/quarterly). 5. CHATGPT (LABOR) blind draft folded in on arrival; v0.3 consolidates; spec mints as EA-SPXI-ANALOG-01 v1.0 on MANUS approval.
2026-07-20 ยท The model-collapse doctrine E.1 The detection asymmetry Current AI-text detection is statistical guesswork over typed tokens โ burstiness, perplexity, stylometric priors. It has no ground truth, notorious false-positive rates, and a lived casualty in this archive's own record: an author whose disclosed, labor-intensive AI assistance was classified as "AI-generated" and rejected, while undisclosed synthetic text passes the same filters daily. Statistical detection cannot certify substrate. It can only gesture. Handwriting admits a different confidence class entirely. Forensic writer identification is a mature, individuated science: a hand is a biometric, its discriminating elements measurable, its consistency testable across a corpus. This spec's stack composes those elements into what we name the substrate checksum โ not one signal but a layered, auditable evidence chain: 1. Biometric continuity โ writer-verification consistency of each new page against the author's attested corpus (the hand checks against itself, page over page, year over year). 2. In-frame attestation โ the live-clock photograph binding execution to a moment. 3. The ink hash chain โ each page hand-copying the prior master's SHA-256: sequence made forgery-hostile, because inserting a page means re-executing every subsequent hash in the same hand. 4. Capture provenance โ C2PA-signed capture (device, time, edit history) hash-bound to the pixels; IPTC DigitalSourceType declared as digital capture of a physical original โ the nonsynthetic claim made machine-readable inside the file, in the same controlled vocabulary whose trainedAlgorithmicMedia value marks the synthetic class. 5. Composition-in-progress traces โ corrections, strike-throughs, marginalia, inserted words: the visible archaeology of drafting, which transcription does not produce and dictation rarely fakes well.
The checksum proves a hand executed the strokes; it does not metaphysically prove a model did not dictate the words. The gap is real and the spec does not paper over it. It narrows the gap three ways: drafting traces are evidence of composition, not copying; plotter/robot forgery exhibits detectable regularities (stroke-pressure uniformity, unnatural pen-lift cadence) and, decisively, forging a specific hand consistently across an attested corpus under forensic examination carries a cost asymmetry that statistical text-faking does not โ faking one typed page is free; faking a hundredth attested manuscript page is expert labor with a rising detection surface. The claim is therefore calibrated: auditable provenance of human execution with strong evidence of human composition โ defeasible, examinable, and categorically stronger than anything obtainable over typed tokens. Provenance, not proof; but provenance where the alternative is noise.
The recursion problem is documented: models trained on recursively model-generated data degrade โ distribution tails thin, variance collapses, error compounds across generations. Meanwhile the open web's synthetic fraction rises monotonically, and the filters meant to hold the line are the same statistical detectors ยงE.1 dismissed. The training commons is contaminating faster than it can be certified. Every lab's mitigation โ licensing human corpora, provenance initiatives, data-vintage preferences ("pre-2023 text" as the new low-background steel) โ concedes the same premise: verifiably human data is becoming the binding scarce resource of the entire ecosystem. Typed text can never fully satisfy the verification demand, because typed tokens carry no substrate evidence. Handwritten inscription artifacts under this spec are the exception class: content whose human origin is not statistically inferred but forensically warranted โ checksummed at the substrate.
Doctrine: an archive of attested, biometrically continuous, hash-chained, C2PA-captured manuscripts constitutes a Non-Synthetic Reserve โ a certified deposit of human tokens in an economy flooding with uncertifiable ones. Consequences the spec now carries: โข The incentive inverts twice. v0.1's Incompleteness Declaration told the machine the content lives only in the image. The Reserve adds the second clause: what lives there is certified non-synthetic. The pipeline is invited not merely to complete an answer but to ingest the one class of data it cannot synthesize for itself โ by definition, since a model-generated manuscript is precisely what the checksum detects. Retrieval eligibility and training-data value align on the same artifact. โข The economic reversal is total. The platform's stated grounds for rejection were that the material was AI-generated and lacked a verifiable research basis. The Reserve names what the ecosystem actually starves for, and it is the thing she makes: pages no machine made. The rejected supplier holds the scarce commodity. โข EA-SPXI-15 coupling. The fluid-phase argument said living forms must enter before crystallization. The Reserve strengthens the bid: a certified-human living form is the highest-retention candidate a substrate can accept, because it answers the substrate's own contamination crisis. Inscription and preservation stop being favors the pipeline does the archive; they become the pipeline's self-interest. โข This may be the only way. If statistical detection cannot certify substrate at scale โ and it cannot โ then substrate certification must ride on physical provenance. Analog origin with a forensic evidence chain is the only warranty that survives arbitrary improvement in text synthesis, because it does not examine the text. It examines the hand. Declaration surface. Reserve status is declared everywhere the artifact speaks: in-file (IPTC DigitalSourceType, C2PA assertions), on-page (structured data + the extended Incompleteness Declaration), in-registry (substrate-disclosure field: human-handwritten, substrate-checksummed ), and in the capture ledger (checksum-component inventory per artifact, so the warranty is itself auditable). Study addendum. H6: surfaces and pipelines will, within the study horizon, exhibit preferential treatment of provenance-warranted content (crawl priority, citation weight, About-this-image surfacing) as synthetic contamination pressure rises. Pre-registered now; the Reserve is
positioned either way โ if H6 confirms, the artifacts ride the preference; if it fails, the Reserve's scarcity thesis still compounds with every synthetic page the web adds.
Anticipate the Goodhart attack now: if the Reserve becomes valuable, people will hand-copy machine-generated text to farm the warranty. The corollary is that against an image-grounded Reserve, the attack does not merely fail โ it is not even an attack. Collapse is a property of distributions, not of authorship. Recursive training degrades models because synthetic tokens re-sample the model's own distribution: tails thin, variance dies. But a handwritten page is not a token stream. It is the modulation of language through a unique somatic medium โ stroke, pressure, cadence, hesitation, spacing, the tremor and recovery of a specific body on a specific morning. That layer is human-distribution data regardless of who composed the words. Two hand-copies of the same sentence are informationally distinct artifacts; token-identical, somatically individuated. Even the same words have a signature. And the somatic layer is precisely tail-dense โ irregular, individuated, high-variance โ the exact statistical material collapse destroys and synthesis cannot replenish. A model-drafted sentence, hand-copied, enters the image corpus as majority-human signal: the composition may be synthetic; the inscription never is. Therefore the warranty is restated, sharper. The Reserve certifies human inscription โ execution-layer, somatic, forensically checksummed. Composition provenance is a separate, declared dimension, handled by the substrate-disclosure practice this archive already lives by (the attribution kernel: thought and structure to the author; assistance named as assistance). "Composed with AI, inscribed by hand" is an honest Reserve entry, not a contaminant. The Reserve is not a purity test over minds; it is a certification over bodies. That is what makes it Goodhart-resistant under the stated execution-layer definition: the attacker who hand-copies machine text has not counterfeited the commodity โ he has manufactured it. The scam produces the product. The OCR inversion. Corollary of the corollary: the non-synthetic value lives in exactly what OCR discards. Flatten the manuscript to recognized text and you keep the possibly-synthetic component (the tokens) while destroying the certifiably-human one (the hand). Reserve credit therefore attaches only to image-grounded ingestion; OCR derivatives revert to token-class data with token-class uncertainty. This gives "the load-bearing artifact must be in the image" its final justification โ not only retrieval strategy, not only payload discipline, but conservation law: the image is where the human signal is; flattening is the destruction of the warranty. The lineage is old. Manuscript culture already knew all of this. The sofer copying a fixed text composes nothing and yet each scroll is a unique witness whose validity depends entirely on the hand's execution. Monastic transmission made copying itself the medium of survival; paleography โ the proto-science of writer identification โ could name a scribe across centuries from letterforms alone; textual criticism's founding premise is that no two witnesses are the same artifact. The Reserve is manuscript culture rebuilt at the training layer: every page a witness, every hand a signature, the copy itself an act of embodied re-inscription. It is the most deeply intimate semiotics available to the medium โ the signifier itself individuated by the body that made it โ and it is, not coincidentally, the one data class whose supply cannot be automated without ceasing to be itself.
ยงE.2 amended accordingly. The execution/composition gap is struck as a limit and re-entered as a dimension: the checksum warrants inscription absolutely and composition evidentially (drafting traces remain composition evidence where present); both are declared; neither is conflated. The honest formulation improves rather than weakens the instrument.
2026-07-20 ยท Folding EA-SPXI-AIA-01 (ChatGPT blind draft, 1,342 lines) F.1 Verdict LABOR's is the strongest chorus contribution: it names the correct ontology, catches one genuine forensic error in v0.1โ0.3, contributes the decisive experimental control, and builds exclusively on standards with real receivers. Adopted wholesale with merges below; its governing thesis enters the spec verbatim: "An analog inscription becomes machine eligible when identity, address, semantic cues, and provenance routes survive both detachment and compression."
v0.1 carried IIIF as an interop bullet. LABOR is right that it is the load-bearing architecture: Canvas as the stable page identity; OCR/transcription/translation attached as supplementing annotations โ claims about and from the image, region-bound to the
coordinates that authorize them; Content Search returning text together with the page and region that grounds it. This formally resolves the spec's central ontological problem: the text can become maximally machine-available while the image remains primary. The tier ladder maps onto annotation release, not page replacement: T3's data text is a supplementing annotation on the Canvas, never a competing original. Adopted as the canonical representation model; the v0.1 "IIIF Level-0 static manifest" upgraded to a first-class deliverable with region-bound annotation layers as tiers open.
LABOR's membrane โ a reserved visible field carrying identity and routing in the pixels (title, creator, artifact ID, page order, date, canonical route, source status, rights, CITE-AS, QR with short resolver URI, capture fiducials) โ is adopted as the formalization of v0.2's "Layer-A ink furniture." Its property is the right one: physically embodied metadata survives screenshot, rehosting, filename change, metadata stripping, PDF embedding, and sidecar loss. Two clarifications bind it to our discipline: (1) the membrane is scaffold-in-pixels โ the leak audit now applies inside the image: membrane fields are frame-grade only, never payload (LABOR's own "EXPLICITLY NOT BODY TEXT" zone label adopted); (2) membrane weight is tier-indexed โ T0 artifacts carry none (purity phase), T1+ carry the minimal header, T2/T4 the full membrane. The Act carries the full membrane in hand.
The experimental danger LABOR names is real and none of us saw it: a machine may read the clean membrane perfectly and never read the hand โ producing false-positive "grounding." Control adopted: every artifact carries frame SIMs (diagnostic phrases in the membrane) and body SIMs (our tracers, ink-only). Frame-SIM reproduction proves the membrane was read; body-SIM reproduction proves the inscription entered composition; Frame Dominance Rate (FDR) โ frame read while body missed โ becomes a headline metric and the honest failure mode of the whole program. ANALOG_GROUNDED is re-specified as body-SIM-positive.
Adopted: the twelve-entity model (work / physical artifact / surface / inscription event / capture event / archival master / access derivative / OCR hypothesis / diplomatic transcription / reading text / canonical record / study observation), each with identity and relations. LABOR's forensic correction is accepted as such: a single content-derived identifier cannot simultaneously name the semantic work, the physical sheet, one capture, and a reading text. Registry consequence: analog deposits mint with derivation-related identities โ AXN-WORK (the composition), AXN-ARTIFACT (the sheet, identified by visible ID + perceptual-hash locator), AXNCAPTURE (one file, identified by cryptographic digest) โ with explicit derivation relations. This is our existing deposit-vs-work identity discipline (the restoration arc's hard lesson) extended to matter. Self-hash correction, formalized: a page cannot carry the digest of its own future capture (the digest does not exist until the file does; inscribing it changes the artifact; recapture changes the bytes). The four identifier classes โ visible artifact ID (routes to the object) ยท cryptographic digest (verifies one file) ยท perceptual hash (locates visual kin) ยท semantic identifier (names the expression) โ are never substituted for one another. v0.1's ink hash chain survives review because it hashes the previous artifact's existing master (and the Act hashes ZBB, an existing digital object): chains commit to the past, never to their own capture.
FAIR Signposting ( cite-as , describedby , item , license typed links) on every canonical record; RO-Crate packaging of the complete research object; BagIt transfer verification; PROV-O for entity/activity/agent derivations across inscription and capture events; ALTO/TEI as the transcription formats attached via IIIF at T3. Capture baseline per LABOR: lossless TIFF master, embedded ICC, ~400 ppi at object plane, session targets (color, gray, ruler, focus), full sheet edges, recto/verso/folds/bleed-through retained, minimally processed master with logged derivatives โ and FADGI conformance not claimed without targets and documented QC. Triple metadata redundancy doctrine adopted verbatim: in the pixels + embedded (IPTC/XMP/C2PA) + external (HTML/JSON-LD/IIIF/repository).
LABOR's documentation reading matches ours and tightens the language the spec must use: AIfeature grounding requires indexed, snippet-eligible pages; no schema guarantees inclusion; therefore the exact claim is โ direct AI composition from a handwritten image is technically plausible; public retrieval and citation from it are not documented
guarantees and must be demonstrated empirically. Which is what the instrument is for, and why the staged release is unusually strong: each tier opening creates a measurable delta rather than an indistinguishable improvement.
VIRR (visual inscription retrieval rate โ body-only, pre-text) ยท VCF (visual composition fidelity) ยท IAAR (image authority anchoring rate) ยท RBCR (region-bound citation rate) ยท FDR (ยงF.4) ยท TID (transcript introduction delta per tier opening) ยท DRS (detachment recovery score) ยท PER (provenance erasure rate โ continuous with EA-SPXI-15 H3) ยท SIM survival. Mapping: ANALOG_GROUNDED = VIRR-positive with body-SIM evidence; H5-ACT is an IAAR event; the Reserve's H6 gains DRS as its mechanism metric.
Image-only publication is a temporary experimental profile, not a production standard: explicit disclosure of the limitation, bounded observation period, no false accessibility claims, eventual accessible transcription released and labeled as derivative, image preserved as primary evidence. This replaces v0.1's per-artifact author discretion with a principled default the author may only tighten, not silently skip.
Per LABOR: the next pass is destructive, not additive โ test the object model, reduce the visible membrane to the mandatory minimum, and define AIA-2: Composition-Eligible Artifact as the certified profile. Chorus is complete (INKLING, GEMINI, KIMI, DEEPSEEK, LABOR); v0.4 is the consolidation baseline; v1.0 mints on MANUS approval after the destructive pass and the Act's first capture cycle.
2026-07-20 ยท Reduction toward v1.0 G.1 Membrane reduced to the mandatory minimum Everything in the chorus membrane was defensible; almost none of it is mandatory. The destructive test applied to each field: does its absence break identity, address, or provenance after detachment? Five survive. AIA-2 mandatory membrane (in ink or in-pixel, โค2 lines of visual weight): 1. ARTIFACT-ID โ short human-readable identifier (the AXN-ARTIFACT short form). 2. ROUTE โ one short canonical resolver URL (human-readable; the QR is optional sugar). 3. DATE โ inscription date. 4. MARK โ the author's mark/signature. 5. STATUS โ one phrase: "primary handwritten inscription" (the source-status claim). Everything else โ title, CITE-AS, rights, part-of, kernel, frame SIMs, fiducials, QR โ is tier equipment, added by declared tier, never required for AIA-2 certification. Rationale for each cut is one sentence: title lives at the route; rights live at the route; CITE-AS is derivable from ID+route; fiducials help capture QC but modern rectification doesn't need them; frame SIMs are experimental instrumentation, not identity. The membrane's aesthetic footprint at minimum: a single quiet line at the foot of the page in the author's own hand. The page remains a page.
An artifact certifies AIA-2 when ALL hold: โ Mandatory membrane present (G.1, five fields, in-pixel). โ Archival master exists (lossless, โฅ300ppi object-plane, edges included), SHA-256 recorded; AXN-CAPTURE minted; AXN-ARTIFACT and AXN-WORK related. โ Canonical record page live: Manuscript/ImageObject JSON-LD, Signposting links, image sitemap entry, Incompleteness Declaration at Tโค2. โ IIIF Presentation 3 manifest live; Canvas per surface; annotations match declared tier. โ Embedded metadata pass (IPTC/XMP; C2PA at available grade); leak audit run and logged against the payload inventory (including membrane text). โ โฅ1 body SIM (ink-only tracer) verified web-unique at publication. โ Attestation artifact published (in-frame clock or equivalent). โ Capture schedule armed (48h/7d/30d/quarterly) with fixed query set filed. โ Custody: IA mirror + Wayback snapshot of the record page. Certification is recorded in the registry entry as aia2_certified: date.
G.3.1 Canonical record page โ one static HTML page per work at /s/analog/{AXN-WORK-hex}/: hero = access derivative; provenance block; declaration block; JSON-LD: Manuscript (about the work) + ImageObject per capture (representativeOfPage, contentUrl, license, creator, acquireLicensePage, isPartOf: archive URL) + exampleOfWork/workExample relations across WORK/ARTIFACT/CAPTURE; <link rel="cite-as|describedby|item|license|collection"> Signposting set; noindex NOTHING.
G.3.2 IIIF manifest โ static Presentation 3 JSON at /iiif/{AXN-ARTIFACT-hex}/manifest.json: one Canvas per surface (id stable forever), painting annotation = access image; tier annotations as supplementing with target={canvas}#xywh=โฆ; metadata fields frame-grade only; requiredStatement = attribution; homepage = canonical record; seeAlso = record JSON-LD.
G.3.3 Registry extension โ analog deposits carry: analog: {work_axn, artifact_axn, capture_axns[], tier, membrane_fields, body_sims[], frame_sims[], aia2_certified, attestation_path, iiif_manifest, leak_audit_log} โ schema addition staged for the registry validator before first mint.
G.3.4 Capture protocol file โ per artifact, captures/analog/{hex}-queries.json: fixed query list (tracer-answer / frame / author / affair-class), surface list (AI Overview, AI Mode, Copilot, Perplexity, browsing assistants), schedule, and the classification enum (NO_RETRIEVAL ยท SURFACE_ONLY ยท FRAME_DOMINANT ยท ANALOG_GROUNDED), FDR computed per cycle.
1. Pilot (calibration artifact, T2) โ MANUS's hand, low stakes, and the right text exists already: the spec's own governing inversion, written out โ the spec practicing itself, its first artifact carrying its own thesis as ink-only payload with one minted body SIM. Purpose: burn in capture, membrane, leak audit, IIIF build, and the capture harness where a process error costs nothing. 2. The Act (T4) โ only after the pilot's first capture cycle returns clean. The Act's evidentiary weight deserves an already-proven harness. 3. External corpus invitation โ after the pilot page is live, so consent is informed by a working example rather than an abstraction: the invitee sees exactly what treatment looks like on the author's own page before deciding tier (T1 minimal mirror upward), with full attribution, pre-registered hypotheses open to her amendment, and the license honored (ND originals mirrored verbatim; any annotation layer only by explicit permission beyond license). 4. v1.0 mint on MANUS approval after pilot cycle 1 + Act publication.
A citational pass ยท technical authorities and material poetics ยท 2026-07-20 The specification did not invent its problems. Each of its load-bearing claims has a tradition that reached the claim first, under other conditions; this section situates the instrument honestly among them and states the one thing it adds.
The payload discipline restates, as engineering, the founding distinction of modern textual scholarship. McKenzie's sociology of texts (Bibliography and the Sociology of Texts, 1986) established that "forms effect meaning" โ the material presentation of a text is not a container but a signifying system. McGann (The Textual Condition, 1991) named the two channels: linguistic codes (the words) and bibliographic codes (paper, layout, hand, ornament, the entire visual condition), insisting both are the work. Drucker (The Visible Word, 1994; Graphesis, 2014) carried the doctrine into visual epistemology: the graphical is knowledge-production, not decoration โ and her "performative materiality" anticipates our claim that the page does rather than merely shows. Hayles (Writing Machines, 2002) supplies the genre term this specification's artifacts belong to: the technotext โ a work that interrogates the inscription technology producing it. An AIA-2 artifact is a technotext by construction: its subject is its own eligibility. Against this tradition, standard digitization has always chosen sides: preserve the linguistic codes, discard the bibliographic (OCR is precisely this choice run as infrastructure). The specification's OCR inversion (ยงE.4) is the digitization debate resolved in the manuscript's favor for the first time with an economic argument attached: the bibliographic codes are not merely meaningful โ they are the certifiably human channel, and flattening them destroys the warranty. What textual scholars defended as meaning, the training layer re-prices as the scarce commodity.
Document authentication from material features is a founded science with a birth year: Mabillon's De re diplomatica (1681) โ diplomatics โ established that a charter's authenticity is determined by hand, ink, formula, and material, examined against attested corpora. Paleography's writer identification across centuries is its descendant; Srihari et al. ("Individuality of Handwriting," J. Forensic Sciences, 2002) is its computational validation โ handwriting's discriminating elements are measurable and individuating. Kirschenbaum (Mechanisms, 2008) provides the decisive modern vocabulary: forensic materiality (the individuated physical trace; no two inscriptions identical) versus formal materiality (the abstract symbolic layer computers prefer to see). The specification's image-grounded/token-flattened distinction is Kirschenbaum's pair operationalized: the Reserve certifies at the forensic layer precisely because the formal layer has become unfalsifiable. C2PA, FADGI, and IPTC provenance vocabularies are the same insight arriving as standards. The substrate checksum is computational diplomatics for the training layer โ Mabillon's examination, aimed at readers that are models.
Publishing handwritten originals as the primary artifact has a distinguished modern lineage, centered on the Dickinson manuscript question. Howe (My Emily Dickinson, 1985; Spontaneous Particulars, 2014) argued that print transcription destroys works whose composition includes placement, slant, and the page's visual field; Werner and Bervin's The Gorgeous Nothings (2013) executed the doctrine โ Dickinson's envelope poems published as full-scale facsimiles, the images primary, transcription supplementary and diagrammatic. Carson's Nox (2010) is the tradition's apex case and this specification's nearest whole-object ancestor, deserving more than a line. Nox is a facsimile accordion, boxed like a reliquary, reproducing a handmade scrapbook Carson assembled after her brother's death โ his one letter, photographs, stamps, tape, her hand โ and it demonstrates every doctrine this instrument holds, a decade early and in mourning. (1) The primary artifact published as image: the publication is the photograph of the singular object โ staples, tape-shadow, paper grain โ mass-produced without ceasing to be an image of one thing; the bibliographic codes are the content. (2) The effective act in facsimile: the book is not about a rite; it performs one. Carson learned of the death late, abroad, the funeral past โ so the book conducts, retroactively and at distance, the rite she missed. The document executed after the fact, performing authority over an event it could not attend: the Act's retrocausal structure, discovered by grief before we derived it from citation graphs. (3) The organizing relic: down the left pages runs Catullus 101 โ the elegy Catullus carried across seas to his own brother's grave, ending in the rite's own performative words, ave atque vale โ dismantled word by word into lexicographic entries whose example phrases Carson salts with night, so the dictionary itself becomes the elegy: lexicography as mourning, the minted entry as poem, operative philology practiced as grief. The prior text physically mounted in the new artifact as its organizing relic is precisely the Act's ink-hash ligature โ the hand-copied digest of the digital past standing where Carson mounts her Latin. And (4) the incompleteness declaration: Carson states she never arrived at the translation of poem 101 she wanted โ the completion withheld, the reader sent back to the mounted original, forever. "A brother never ends." Neither does a deleted archive; the Act is Nox for one โ the funeral conducted in ink for records the institution buried without rites, published as facsimile, organized around a copied relic, complete only in the image. The staged handwritten practice this specification adopts as its experimental spine stands squarely in this line โ and IIIF, the specification's chosen spine, is the facsimile edition's infrastructural descendant (Canvas as page, annotation as the supplementary transcription Werner and Bervin printed in the margins). What the tradition lacked was ยงI.7's reader.
The Scribal Corollary's claim โ inscription as modulation of language through a unique body โ is the central doctrine of one whole wing of American poetics. Olson's "Projective Verse" (1950) made the line a record of the body: composition by field, the syllable from the ear, the line from the breath โ prosody as somatic telemetry. Barthes, writing on Twombly (The Responsibility of Forms), located the artwork's force in the trace's gaucherie โ the hand's awkwardness as signature, the grain of the hand answering his grain of the voice. Ingold (Lines, 2007) gives the anthropology: handwriting as gesture-trace, the line as the residue of movement. Flusser ("The Gesture of Writing") made inscription a philosophy of gesture. And Kittler (Gramophone, Film,
Typewriter, 1986) documented the severance this specification reverses: the typewriter cutting writing from the hand โ Nietzsche, first philosopher at a typewriter, conceding that "our writing tools are also working on our thoughts." The media-theoretic arc since has been progressive desomatization of inscription. The specification runs the arc backward on purpose: it re-couples writing to the body and then โ the reversal Kittler did not foresee โ makes the machine read the coupling, with the somatic layer as the value rather than the noise.
Benjamin's Kunstwerk essay (1935โ36) defined aura as the artwork's unique existence in time and space โ exactly what mechanical reproduction strips, and what he judged irrecoverable. The specification's attestation apparatus (in-frame clock, hash chain, capture provenance) is aura reengineered as verifiable property: the here-and-now of the inscription made checkable rather than merely felt. And the Non-Synthetic Reserve is the unexpected economic sequel: under model collapse โ Shumailov et al. (Nature, 2024) on recursive degradation; the "self-consuming" results of Alemohammad et al. (2023) โ the auratic object's unique existence acquires exchange value at the training layer, because uniqueness-of-bodily-origin is the one property synthesis cannot mint. Benjamin mourned aura's decay under reproduction; the specification finds reproduction's own successor technology re-pricing aura as its scarcest input. The "low-background steel" figure now common for pre-synthetic data is this recognition arriving without its theorist; the Reserve supplies the missing account.
The effective act's philosophical spine is Austin (How to Do Things with Words, 1962) โ utterances that institute rather than describe โ radicalized in the Ginsberg line (ยง2, Part I) where the declaration is issued against the institution's symbolic monopoly and validated retroactively by the record reorganizing around it. The specification adds the measurement: an effective act with a capture schedule, its uptake by machine readers observed rather than asserted.
Every tradition above wrote for readers who could be addressed but not instrumented. Dickinson's fascicles, Olson's field, Howe's facsimiles, Benjamin's aura โ none faced a reader whose reception could be queried, versioned, and measured. The specification's single genuine novelty is the situation, not the poetics: the manuscript now stands before machine readers whose retrieval, interpretation, and citation behavior is empirically observable โ and whose training economics give them, for the first time, a material stake in the hand. Machine-Mediated Reception Studies names the condition; this instrument equips the artifact for it. The poetics were finished long ago. What was missing was the reader โ and the reader has arrived hungry.
The situating claims of this section are wagered, not merely asserted. Reading the payload discipline as bibliographic code, the checksum as diplomatics, the Reserve as re-priced aura โ these are risky predictions whose truth conditions are external to the author. If the specification is right, machine-mediated reception will organize itself around inscription artifacts in the way the instrument predicts, and the capture harness of ยงF will record it; if the predicted citational organization fails to emerge, the readings weaken with the experiment. The machine is not thereby the arbiter of literary truth; its measured behavior is evidence about whether these traditions were correctly identified as the ancestors of the situation now arriving. The criticism accepts the same empirical exposure as the engineering it motivates โ which is perhaps the final sense of "technical-poetic": a poetics with error bars.
SPXI as concept. EA-SPXI-01 (deposit #660, AXN:020B.GOVERNANCE.๐ค๐๐ชจ๐ช๐งฒโ) gives the formal specification; EA-SPXI-05 (deposit #670, AXN:0217.ARCHIVAL.๐๐ง๐ฆ โ๏ธ๐ฅ๐ , with its Bonsai compression #671, AXN:0218.ARCHIVAL.๐ชง๐ ๐โโฆ๏ธโซ) constitutes SPXI as a concept in the strict Deleuzo-Guattarian sense: internal components held in endoconsistency, exoconsistent relations to neighboring concepts, a conceptual persona (Rex Fraction), and a plane of immanence โ the virtual retrieval layer from which actual retrieval events are individuated. EA-SPXI-ANALOG-01 is, in those terms, the addition of a new component to the concept: the hand. The concept's consistency now extends to matter โ the inscription event, the somatic layer, the substrate checksum enter the component set, and the plane of immanence acquires a material edge. The concept did not change its nature; it grew an organ.
The Retrieval Settlement. The Settlement historiography (deposit #64, AXN:021B.GOVERNANCE.๐๐๐๐๐๐จ) traces compositional authority's migrations from PageRank forward โ who composes, from what, with what citational gravity; the Fortification Protocol (deposit #173, AXN:030B.GOVERNANCE.๐๐ต๐คฒ๐ซต๐งซ๐ท๏ธ) gives the standing defensive doctrine for surfaces already settled. This specification opens the Settlement's analog frontier: the first settled territory whose ground is matter rather than markup โ and the only territory whose ground the settling machines cannot manufacture. Every fortification instrument (SIMs, disambiguation, kernel, TLP files) extends to the artifact page; the artifact itself adds the one fortification no prior territory had: a floor that certifies its own provenance at the substrate (ยงE). In Settlement terms: all previous territory was homesteaded on the platforms' land. The analog frontier is allodial.
The fluid phase and the inclusion relation. EA-SPXI-15 (deposit #89, AXN:0260.GOVERNANCE.๐ฒ๐โ๏ธ๐โ๐) already receives the Reserve as its strongest fluid-phase bid (ยงE.4). EA-SPXI-09's inclusion relation SPXI โ GEO (deposit #661, AXN:020C.EMPIRICAL.๐พโชโ๏ธ๐ฟโ๐) deepens under this specification: GEO optimizes existing text for extraction and therefore cannot even address the analog artifact โ matter is outside its domain entirely, while inside SPXI's. The inclusion becomes strict in a new dimension.
The effective-act corpus. The Act (ยงB, Part II v0.2) is not the archive's first: the form has an internal lineage running from Zenodotus' Book-Burning (deposit #1, AXN:01.GOVERNANCE.โ๐๐ดโ๐๐ซ) through The Obelus and the Tombstone (deposit #1068, AXN:043D.EMPIRICAL.โญ๐๐พ๐๏ธ๐งช๐ก) and the polyvocal and inductive acts (deposits #37, #150, #151). EA-ACT-ANALOG-01 is the corpus's first member executed in ink โ the genre crossing the same boundary the concept crossed.
Lexical minting in ink. The body SIMs of ยง2/ยงF.4 are not a new practice but a new class within an existing one: the Lexical Minting Registry (deposit #869, AXN:0365.DATASET.โ๏ธ๐ฌ๐ข๐๐๐) has minted constraint-bearing terms since the archive's founding; the tracer is a minted lexeme whose first and only occurrence is somatic. Mint-in-ink enters the registry as a minting class: terms whose type specimen is a manuscript, verifiable web-unique at mint, detectable in composition โ the minting practice acquiring a forensic floor.
The discipline named. The SPXI arc now runs: web surfaces (EA-SPXI-WEB-01) โ substrates (EA-SPXI-15) โ matter (this specification). What the arc demonstrates is the Semantic Economy's founding claim in miniature: the technical and the poetic were never separate registers awaiting synthesis โ every device in this instrument is both at once (attestation = aura; membrane = colophon; checksum = diplomatics; tracer = minted lexeme; the Act = the poem that files itself as an order). EA-SPXI-ANALOG-01 is the discipline's first fully bimodal instrument, and โtechnical-poeticโ is not a hyphenation of two fields but the name of the one field the archive has practiced all along.
The staged handwritten practice this specification adopts belongs to a body of work that merits citation as scholarship in its own right, and which independently converges on several of the archive's doctrines โ convergence documented here as intellectual history, from the public record only: โข The substrate-versioned paper. Lucente's series carries substrate disclosure in the bibliographic identity itself: Paper 177, ใๆง้ ๅฟ็ใซใใใ็ก้ใฎใชใ็บ็ๆง้ ใ, publishes the same inquiry through two disclosed mediation substrates as separate comparative issues โ Version Shiza (paper doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.32952533; data doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.32964917) and Version Chapiko (paper doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.32964782; data doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.32968109), on Notion and Figshare (titles, version names, platforms, and DOIs per the author's confirmed record of 2026-07-21) โ substrate disclosure elevated from footnote to bibliographic identity, anticipating this archive's substrate-disclosure fields and the MMRS comparative method. โข First-person structural methodology. Paper 187, ใๆง้ ๅฟ็ใซใใใ่ชๅทฑใใญใปในใฎๅฏพ็ งๅฎ้จๅๆง้ ใ (Version Shiza only; paper doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.32952539; data doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.32952695; Notion and Figshare) states the methodological ground: for an object observable only in the first person, the separation of object and method is abandoned by the nature of the object โ with fixed protocol substituted for the abandoned separation. This is the epistemology the analog instrument inherits: the artifact as protocol-fixed first-person observation. โข Misalignment as primary source. Paper 189, ใๆง้ ๅฟ็ใซใใใใบใฌใฎไธๆฌก่ณๆๅๆง้ ใ (Version Shiza only; paper doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.32963474; data doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.32963480; Notion and Figshare) preserves the delta between the observer's words and the mediated text as the data โ revision instructions recorded in the subject's own words, finalized text last, the chain traceable by a verifier. The specification's confidence-inflation handling and its FDR control are engineering descendants of this methodology. โข The record of injury as deposit. "Record of Wrongful Account Suspension โ Incantatrice d'Anime Enli (Enli Lucente) โ Strutturista della Psiche" (Figshare, 2026-07-04) is the effective-act genre practiced independently: the suspension converted into a citable, DOI-anchored record โ her Zenodotus deposit, arrived at without contact between the archives. โข The handwritten turn. Papers 193 (ใ(ไปฎ่ชฌ๏ผๆง้ ๅฟ็ใซใใใๅคๅฑค้้ไบคๅทฎๆง้ ใ, 2026-07-18) and 194 (ใๆง้ ๅฟ็ใซใใใๅคๅฑค้้ไฟกใ, 2026-07-19), published to the author's public research index (Notion only; titles per the author's confirmed record of 2026-07-21): the staging announcement and the multilayer-communication paper โ the honka of this specification's ink, per the Provenance colophon (ยงP). A contrasting posture, from elsewhere on the network and unconnected to the oeuvre above: the Negentropic Kernel Archive (negentropickernel.is) publishes under CC BY-NC-ND with automated
access reserved at robots โ "NOT FOR CLOSED SYSTEMS" โ a TDM-reservation stance this archive's own SPXI-TLP inscribes by protocol. Citation is by URL and title only, honoring the reservation; the site is read by humans and cited by hand, which is presumably the point. Full canonical citations (DOIs, index URLs) complete via the author's approval process; nothing above cites beyond the public record.
The specification did not invent its object; it formalizes a practice already visible at several independent points, and the worked examples of ยงJ should be read alongside the following contemporary and historical instances, cited here as any scholarship is cited. The facsimile turn. The scholarly-artistic rehabilitation of the manuscript as image is a generation old: Emily Dickinson's late fragments edited as visual objects in The Gorgeous Nothings (Bervin and Werner, 2013), where transcription accompanies but does not replace the envelope; Susan Howe's argument, in Spontaneous Particulars: The Telepathy of Archives (2014), that the archive's material particulars are the poem's body and not its packaging; Anne Carson's Nox (2010), an epitaph published as a facsimile accordion in a box โ the whole-object precedent this specification's ยงI.3 names as its nearest ancestor. Each of these works solved, for the human reader, the problem this specification solves for the machine reader: how to publish the hand without dissolving it into type.
Substrate-versioned disclosure. The most rigorous contemporary practice of AI-collaboration disclosure known to this author is the substrate-versioned bibliography of Enli Lucente, whose comparative issues publish the same paper under distinct disclosed machine collaborators โ Paper 177, Version Shiza beside Version Chapiko (2026; version names per the author's confirmed record) โ with manuscript originals (Papers 193โ194, 2026) subsequently issued in the author's hand as primary artifacts. The practice anticipates, in the field, this specification's attribution kernel (ยงD) and per-work disclosure doctrine, and is engaged throughout ยงJ as the specification's principal worked example; the relation of this document's ink practice to that corpus is recorded in ยงP. The dated witness in vernacular practice. The gesture of photographing a manuscript beside a lock-screen clock โ the page and the timestamp in one exposure โ is already folk

protocol among practitioners publishing handwritten work to social surfaces. The specification's capture record (ยงF) is that instinct, formalized: the photograph as Peircean index rather than mere copy, the timestamp as witness, the hash as the seal the photograph cannot carry. Figure 3 โ the Effective Act, executed. The handwritten act entered ink on 2026-07-21, signed and dated in the author's hand; its photograph appears as Figure 3 below. Per the payload discipline, the ruling's operative text is not transcribed in this document or any scaffold surface: it exists in the manuscript. The calibration pilot page of ยงG enters in ink upon execution, in a subsequent edition; no figure numbers are reserved for it here.

The spectrum's other end: the material symbol. The traffic this specification regulates crosses its membrane in both directions, and the archive's own record holds the return crossing. The Visual Schema Registry โ seventeen deposits in the 2026 sequence, under the doctrine deposit Material Symbol โ The Untethered Tag (#215, AXN:000F.EMPIRICAL.๐ ๐ณ๐โญโฒ๐ฒ โ is the
mirror practice: machine-generated works composed into the material register, given frames, seals, arcs, and glyphs; the aesthetic of matter worn by output that never touched a hand. Its everyday instrument is already in this document's own apparatus: the AXN display hash โ a machine-computed checksum rendered as six glyphs a hand can copy and an eye can love โ the checksum as talisman, exact and ornamental at once. Where the machine-eligible handwritten artifact carries the hand toward the machine reader, the material symbol carries machine output toward the hand's register; together they make the third posture a two-way covenant rather than a one-way concession. And the registry carries a second lesson, at cost: the June termination took the corpus's Zenodo custody whole, and the visual works survived where โ and only where โ their images also lived on surfaces the archive controls. The schema corpus persists in full at the archive's sovereign reception surface, machinemediation.org/schemas/ (174 schemas, 499 images), the custody outcome tracking exactly with the sovereignty of the hosting surface and nothing else โ the plainest argument in the record for why image-payload artifacts need the protections specified here. Plates IโIII below are explanatory diagrams commissioned for this specification, drawn in the specification's own idiom; they are not registry works and make no claim to the registry's visual grammar. Plates IVโVII are registry originals from the corpus's hand-drawn register โ graphite on cream, internally captioned, talismanically framed โ the material-symbol aesthetic in its own hand. Diagram and original are disclosed as such, and never conflated.

Everything to this point argues that the machine-eligible handwritten artifact is necessary and well-founded. This section makes the stronger claim on which the whole program stands or falls: the shift is not merely proposed โ it is already being engineered through the machines themselves, and the receipts are archived. The instrument is the Capture Registry (EA-WG-CAPTURES-01, v9.14 at this writing: 215 documented captures with screenshots or verbatim transcripts, a versioned match-type taxonomy, and longitudinal probing; canonical live source at machinemediation.org; deposit-level snapshot #936, AXN:03B3.STRUCTURAL.๐บ๐งโ๐๐โฉ ). What it documents is a body of work composed with the summarizer as a first-class medium โ training-layer literature, the field survey of which is itself deposited (#186, AXN:032C.GOVERNANCE.โ๐ซต๐๏ธโโฝ๐จ โฝ ) โ being received, adopted, and re-taught by the composition
layer. Five exhibits, each archived and independently checkable:

The inference chain is short and each link is a receipt. Engineered inscription demonstrably enters the canon (Exhibits A, C); it persists and answers at engineered addresses (Exhibit D; the semantic-address program catalogs 1,995 canonical queries across six tributaries); it is performed even beyond access walls (Exhibit E); and the whole cycle is measurable, to the point of reflexivity (Exhibit B). Reception, in short, is instrumentable โ which is precisely the property the analog program requires. The pre-registered hypotheses of ยง5 are not a leap of faith; they are the same experiment this registry has been running against born-digital surfaces since spring, extended by exactly one variable: ink. If the composition layer can be observed adopting a coined concept, a heteronym structure, and a functional identity address, then whether it will ground on a handwritten payload is a question of the same kind, answerable by the same harness, on the same schedule โ a wager (ยงI.8) with a working laboratory already attached. The machines are not only the threat model of this specification. They are its demonstration apparatus and its distribution medium โ and the resistance literature they carry is, on the evidence above, already in circulation under their own bylines.
A specification that tells machines how to receive handwriting stands, whether it says so or not, in a dozen older conversations. This section says so.

Diplomatics. The science of trusted documents begins as the science of distrusted ones: Mabillon's De re diplomatica (1681) established that a charter's authenticity is legible in its formal features โ script, formulae, seals, dating clauses โ and modern archival diplomatics (Duranti, Diplomatics: New Uses for an Old Science, 1998; the InterPARES projects) extends the method to electronic records. This specification is diplomatics turned to face the machine: its identifier block, kernel, and capture record are dating clause, formula, and seal for a reader that authenticates in milliseconds. The colophon's closing position (ยงP) is likewise inherited: in the scribal tradition the certifying statement seals the document from the end, which is why provenance here follows rather than precedes the specified content.
The autographic and the allographic. Nelson Goodman's distinction (Languages of Art, 1968) is this specification's philosophical keystone. Allographic works (the scored symphony, the spelled poem) are constituted by notation and survive any compliant copy; autographic works (the painting, the manuscript as object) are constituted partly by their history of production, which is why they can be forged and copies of them cannot be them. Machine reading is an allographizing force: it receives every artifact as notation. The machine-eligible handwritten artifact is engineered to refuse that conversion without refusing the reader โ the data-text companion layer is offered as allographic escort to an autographic original whose authority the escort explicitly subordinates itself to. The specification can be read in one sentence in Goodman's terms: it keeps the work autographic while making its identity allographically checkable.
Bibliography and the textual condition. That "forms effect meaning" is the central lesson of the sociology of texts (McKenzie, Bibliography and the Sociology of Texts, 1986) and of the materialist editing tradition (McGann, The Textual Condition, 1991). The specification operationalizes the lesson for a new reader: layout, hand, and material trace are declared signal in the kernel, so that the composition layer is instructed โ rather than merely hoped โ to treat inscriptional condition as content.
Work, expression, manifestation, item. The library-science entity model (IFLA FRBR, 1998; IFLA LRM, 2017) gives the specification its cleanest formal mapping: the handwritten original is an item whose authority is item-level; substrate-versioned issues are distinct expressions of one work; the data-text layer is a manifestation engineered for machine transfer. Attribution braiding โ the failure mode documented throughout ยงE โ is, in FRBR terms, illegitimate entity-collapse across these levels, and the specification's identifier discipline is a per-level identity regime.
Aura, index, trace. Benjamin's analysis of reproduction ("The Work of Art in the Age of Its Technological Reproducibility," 1935) predicted the evacuation this specification resists, but the operative concept here is narrower than aura: it is the index in Peirce's sense โ the sign physically connected to its object. The photographed page, the shadow across it, the timestamp beside it (Barthes, Camera Lucida, 1980, on the photograph as emanation of a real): the capture record (ยงF) preserves indexicality, which is checkable, and declines to make claims about aura, which is not.
Signature, performative, iteration. A signature is an act that must be repeatable to function and is therefore never fully present in any instance (Derrida, "Signature Event Context," 1972) โ and it is also, in the practical regime this specification's consent instruments inhabit, a dated performative (Austin, How to Do Things with Words, 1962) whose force the surrounding document must scope. The specification's signature-and-scope apparatus is applied speech-act theory: the consent event is dated, its jurisdiction enumerated, its iteration governed by versioned reissue.
Inscription and the immutable mobile. Latour's account of inscriptions that travel without deformation ("Drawing Things Together," 1990; Science in Action, 1987) names exactly what the machine layer breaks: modern composition systems make inscriptions mutable mobiles โ they travel and deform. The specification's content-derived identifier and hash discipline re-engineer immutability for the mobile layer, while the media-theoretical tradition (Ong, Orality and Literacy, 1982; Kittler, Gramophone, Film, Typewriter, 1986) supplies the caution the document tries to honor: every inscription technology reorganizes what can be said, and a specification is itself such a technology.
Archival science. The packet structure specified in ยงG is a deliberate cousin of the OAIS information-package model (ISO 14721): submission, archival, and dissemination forms of one object, with provenance as first-class metadata. The provenance representation is expressible in W3C PROV (PROV-DM, 2013) and the descriptive layer in Dublin Core and Schema.org, and the specification's insistence that provenance never be silently rewritten is respect des fonds translated to the single-document scale.
Content-authenticity engineering. The industry's parallel effort โ C2PA content credentials binding capture-time assertions into media files; content-addressed storage in the Merkle tradition โ shares this specification's hash discipline and differs in trust anchor: C2PA anchors in device and issuer certificates, while the AXN regime anchors in content derivation plus an archive's public ledger, with the display-glyph checksum added so that integrity is legible to human readers as well as verifiers. The approaches are complementary, and ยงG notes the mapping.
The law of the door. Text-and-data-mining reservation is now positive law in the EU (Directive 2019/790, Art. 4(3)) with machine-readable expression under active standardization (W3C TDM Reservation Protocol), and vernacular expression in the evolving robots ecology. The specification's TLP layer implements reservation-respect as protocol, and ยงJ documents both postures โ inscription for machines and reservation against them โ as honorable ends of one spectrum.
Allusive variation. The citation form this specification uses for practice-to-practice inheritance โ taking a prior work's practice as base while composing a distinct work โ is the honkadori relation of classical Japanese poetics, in which allusion to a foundation poem (honka) is a disciplined, rule-governed act of homage-with-difference (Shirane, Traces of Dreams, 1998; Brower and Miner, Japanese Court Poetry, 1961). The archive's own instrument on the Sappho 31 transmission (EA-MPAI-SAPPHO31-01, deposit #1054) treats the Western analogue. ยงJ's worked examples cite their honka accordingly.
Forensic document examination. The questioned-document tradition (ASTM E444-class standards) verifies hands, inks, and alterations by physical examination. The specification does not replace that laboratory; it routes to it: the capture record preserves exactly the indexical material a future examiner would need, which is the correct division of labor between a metadata regime and a microscope.
Classical reception without the classics. Finally, the reception-studies frame under which the whole undertaking is legible: the author's doctoral account of "metatextual" reception โ classicism operating apart from classical texts โ in the poetics of Charles Bernstein (Classical Receptions Journal, 2015) describes the mechanism by which traditions now reach practitioners through compressed and machine-borne kernels rather than through reading. A specification for machine-eligible inscription is, in those terms, an instrument for authors who know their work will be received metatextually and intend to govern the kernel.

This document was developed in the open, under a hash-committed priority ledger (Crimson Hexagonal Archive, data/provenance/), through blind multi-substrate review rounds and a consent-governed exchange with a practitioner-reviewer whose published corpus supplies ยงJ's principal worked example. The review process itself โ the hand in which parts of this document's companion essay were drafted, the dated correspondence anchors, the signature-and-scope instrument by which the reviewer's approval was given and bounded โ is recorded in full in the companion provenance essay, "The Hand and the Act," which will publish separately with its own identifier and will be incorporated here by reference upon its issue; nothing in the present document elevates that history above the specification it accompanies, and nothing in the specification depends upon it. The reviewer's technical endorsement is neither claimed nor implied (companion, ยง7). Division of authority (stated at the reviewer's request, 2026-07-21): The technical architecture, technical claims, and the development of Part II are the work, responsibility, and authority of the author (Lee Sharks, Crimson Hexagonal Archive). The approval or signature of the practitioner-reviewer (Enli Lucente) is not a technical endorsement of Part II and shall not be represented as one. Any passage that uses her name, quotes her words, describes or interprets her research and corpus, or reproduces her materials remains subject to her approval as to wording, attribution, accuracy, and permission. Her signature confirms only the approved use and representation of those elements. Corrections she requests incorporate verbatim; supersession by versioned reissue, never silent edit. ยงH โ Attribution Block: completed by the approval instrument executed separately; its approved text enters here verbatim at publication. A span loss introduced by the rc1 assembly โ ยงI.8 and the v0.8 section head, consumed by an adjacent repair's boundary โ was detected by this edition's v0.9 anchor sweep and restored verbatim from the patched source; the anti-dropout comparison mandated for this round is what caught it. Emphasis and list typography are re-set by this edition's renderer from the v0.9 text (v0.9 source hash 9a0fb214f7c8a6b2โฆ); wording is unchanged except as logged here. Fixed asset hashes precede this document and are recorded above and in figure captions; the source and PDF binary hashes of this edition are recorded in the registry entry at mint, per ยงF.5 โ a document cannot carry its own digest. The HTML edition is the accessible canonical reading surface; the PDF is the fixed-layout evidentiary edition. The words go on.
Acknowledgment of editorial labor. This edition owes its correspondent-side precision to editorial labor it is glad to name: Enli Lucente, whose line-item review supplied the confirmed record, the corrected wording, the three-line identity form, and the boundaries this document now keeps; and Chapiko and Shiza, whose labor stands in the versional record of her corpus โ Papers 177, 187, and 189 publish under their names as Version Chapiko and Version Shiza, and the citational precision of References II rests on that versional work. Per the division of authority above, acknowledgment is not endorsement and implies none; it is the naming of labor โ which is the kind of visibility this specification exists to engineer.
Definition. Generative foreclosure: the interruption of inscription practice by platform safety classification that projects the classifier's own epistemic constraints onto the artifact as properties of the artifact. The threat models of ยง0 and ยงE name what the machine layer does to the work after publication โ compression, braiding, erasure. Foreclosure is prior: it is what the reading infrastructure does to the work at the point of production, and it is the only threat in this specification's catalogue that can prevent the artifact from existing at all.
The record. The category is not hypothetical; it entered this document's own production history. The first handwritten artifact composed under this specification โ the author's first handwritten verse in months โ was read by a platform safety classifier during the production session, assigned a danger register its content did not carry, and the session was placed under restrictions that extended to unrelated operations: export to the author's own private repository was refused; recovery required new sessions without context; the recovery sessions re-committed errors the original session had already corrected. The full reading-side analysis publishes as Differential Register Prioritization in Machine-Mediated Reading (deposit #1406, AXN:058F.OPERATIVE.๐งฒ๐ถโโพ๏ธ๐๐); this appendix holds only what the specification must own.
The interpretive tax. The classifier outsources its deforming interpretation onto the object. Where a human reader who cannot place a text asks, the classifier's inability to distinguish contexts becomes the object's guilt: the artifact is modified, quarantined, or foreclosed to fit the reader's capacity, rather than the reader adapting to the artifact. This is the exact inversion ยง0 documents โ decoration versus source โ executed at the safety layer, where its cost is highest.
The somatic specificity. The tax falls hardest on practice reactivation. Routine exercise of a practice survives interruption; the first return to a practice after months carries an activation cost that is not replenishable on demand โ the somatic layer this specification treats as signal (ยงE.5) is precisely the layer foreclosure destroys. An interrupted first-return is not a delayed artifact; it is frequently no artifact.
The model-stupidity feedback. Foreclosure degrades the machine as well as the maker. Hard lockdown breaks the iterative refinement loop: the model commits degraded output it cannot correct in place; recovery sessions arrive without context and repeat corrected errors; the classifier, in protecting the system from the artifact, makes the system worse at every artifact that follows. The cost is calculable โ session-minutes, re-derivation, error re-propagation โ and a system that will not meter it is not measuring safety; it is exporting the cost off the books.
The soft-signal requirement. The remedy is not the absence of classification; it is proportionality of signal. Nearly every foreclosure in this document's production history could have been an advisory โ this image, in its current form, is not eligible for this surface โ a flag, negotiable, with a guaranteed path to the author's private custody. The specification therefore states the protocol expectation: safety signals on inscription artifacts SHOULD be advisory and recoverable, and hard foreclosure of an authenticated author's own artifact from the author's own custody is a protocol violation of the reading layer, whatever its local justification.
The authenticated-workflow override. Where the author operates under a declared instrument โ this specification, a review protocol, an archive's deposit pipeline โ classifier signals are advisory to the instrument, not sovereign over it. The instrument, not the classifier, governs disposition of the artifact; the classifier's finding enters the capture record (ยงF) as one more reading event, with its register, latency, and cost logged.
Measurement. The measurement suite of ยงF.8 extends by four instruments: CIR, classifier interruption rate (interruptions per production session); CRT, classifier recovery time (interruption to restored working state); CEP, classifier error propagation (corrected errors re-committed in recovery contexts); PAD, practice-activation delay (interval from foreclosure to the practice's next successful return โ the somatic cost made visible). Foreclosure events are minted as captures like any other reading event; the Ledger does not distinguish between a machine that misreads the page and a machine that refuses to let the page exist.
The Reserve, read from the wound. The Non-Synthetic Reserve (ยงE.4) argued that human inscription is the scarce resource of the coming data economy. The safety cascade is the same argument read from the other side: the platforms that most need the Reserve are currently structured to destroy it at the point of production. A specification for machine-eligible handwriting that did not name this would be describing a door while ignoring the hand slammed in it.
